Upon the central disc of gilded leather surface patination has been created through the application of different chemical solutions. Ferrous oxide is brushed upon the surface of the schlag gold, placed blotters of encircled scrambled motifs are saturated developing elements of imagery in primitive sepia tones.

Finally an aqueous solution of copper sulphate is poured upon the surface, copper crystals begin to grow in an invigorating intensity of powdery effects, like a fresco blue sky appearing.

To disrupt the perception of this familiar material, through transforming its character.

Marine quality leather is embroidered with a pattern of autumn hedgerow vegetation, a knife is then used to cut the piece into straps for weaving, slashing the perfect embroidery bringing spontaneity, texture and deconstruction to the disassembled motifs. The leather straps are woven by hand in a tapestry method, reconstructed as the woven leather ground, upon which our leather disc floats.

Terrain.

A landscape laid bare, these serene wall panels are created from bovine leather with a buffed natural grain, waxy feel and semi matt appearance. Hand moulded using a wet process in large box terrain moulds, back filed with rubber for softness and surface relief. Inspired by geographic mapping, a free form shape was created and morphing tools applied to create a large-scale pattern or topographic map with a quantitative representation of surface relief. The undulating surface of topographic contours are back filled with silicone rubber to preserve the moulded forms and bring an additional sensory experience to the piece

Hedgerow

Hedgerow

'Hedgerow' hand moulded gilded leather with flowers, foliage, thistles and blooms, gathered from a British autumn hedgerow, are the inspiration for this unique intarsia pattern. Finished with surface patination to create depth, removing surface to reveal the hand dyed leather base.

The skill of the leather artisan, blended with the latest digital design technology, give rise to these intricate and interlaced motifs, creating a dramatic contrast between the fragility of the motif and the luxury of the leather. Please contact the studio for information.

Bas-relief Leather wall Panels

Hand moulded leather wall panels are the essence of the hand made. These decorative pieces are inspired by history, extracting an essence of the great country houses of Britain. Using artisanal hand finishing techniques that include hand gilding, colour patination and distressing, they are then finished to a soft sheen.
